The iPad Mini 4 is the latest device in the line of iPad Minis - the first of which was released in 2012. This current version was released in September 2015 at the Apple 'Hey Siri' event, alongside the new iPad Pro, a beefy hybrid of the iPad and the Macbook Air.
While the release event focused mainly on the new iPad Pro, the Mini 4 was certainly nothing to sneeze at. This Mini tablet replaces the previous Mini version, the iPad Mini 3.
The miniature tablet is designed specifically for those who want something a little bigger than a 'phablet' (e.g. the iPhone 6S Plus) and something a little smaller than a tablet (e.g. the iPad). It completely replaces the iPad Mini 3, which is being discontinued and is no longer available for sale new.
While the iPad Mini 3 failed to impress many people, the 4 has a whole bunch of upgrades that make the device quite a different beast. For a start, it's both thinner (6.1mm) and lighter (299g) than its predecessor.
The model also includes an upgraded A8 chip alongside a M8 motion co-processor with 64 bit architecture - the same setup that is in the iPhone 6 and iPad Air 2.
One of the best upgrades in the Mini 4 is in the WiFi capability. The device is now twice as quick at downloads as the Mini 3, and the SIM enabled version is also capable of faster speeds over cellular data connections, too.
The iPad Mini has increased glare reduction on the screen, which makes it much better than its predecessor for outdoors use. This glare reduction coating is a welcome addition for owners of previous models of the Mini.
While many people skipped the iPad Mini 3, because they just didn't feel that it offered a great range of upgrades from the first generation Mini, the iPad Mini 4 feels like Apple have actually sat up and paid attention to their fan base, who were calling out for upgrades.
iPad Mini 4 vital stats
There's a whole range of tablets that are fairly similar to the iPad Mini 4. These include the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2, the iPhone 6S Plus (if you're after a phone), or the iPad Air 2 (for a bigger screen). If you are after an Android tablet device similar to the Mini 4, then the Samsung is definitely the way to go.
There are also a huge range of phablets - that's the larger size phones - that have been released in the past few years, including the Samsung Galaxy Note series, however these phablets often come at quite a higher price point that the iPad Mini.
Like any of your connected devices, there are so many different accessories you can choose to help in operation of your device, charging it, protected it from damage, and even just making it look cooler! Because each person is different, we all require a different range of accessories for our tablets.
Here are some of the more important items you should look at getting if you already own, or are looking at picking up your own iPad Mini 4.
There are so many different types of chargers available to choose from. If you've got wheels, then an MFI Lightning car charger, or MFI ultra fast Lightning car charger is a good option for charging while driving in the car. Also recommended are a charge hub for multi-device charging, an AC travel charger, and a portable power bank. Power banks are a must have accessory if you often run out of charge when you are out and about.
MFI certified chargers are those which have been approved for sale by Apple themselves and will not void any warranties. It's important to ensure your chargers are MFI certified to avoid running into any issues with your device.
If you get an expensive piece of kit, you want to protect it don't you? With so many cases on the market, it can be difficult to know where to start. While some people might just opt for a good looking case, you can also pick up cases that are built to military standards to keep out water and dust. The iPad Mini 4 OtterBox Defender case, or the Griffin Survivor case are both great choices for a hard wearing case.
You can also check out slimline cases such as the Lifeproof Nuud, or cases that have very handy inbuilt stands such as the OtterBox Symmetry, or even folio cases like the SwitchEasy Canvas Folio.
Other accessories that you might like to think about purchasing are a Bluetooth keyword, if you intend on doing work on your iPad Mini, a wireless flash drive, for extra storage space on your iPad Mini without any cords necessary, a desk or car mount for easy operation, and a stylus, if you are keen on doing a bit of art or scribbled note taking.
The iPad Mini 4 is the perfect tablet for those who want something a bit more than a phone, but without the bulk of most of the range of tablets on the market. If you've ever felt silly holding up your regular iPad to take a photo, then the iPad Mini reduces that silliness. It's also the perfect size if you have small children, and with the reduced size comes a smaller price tag, too.
The iPad mini 4 (Wi-Fi Only) has the model number A1538 while the iPad Mini 4 (Wi-Fi/Cellular) is known as model number A1550.
