With more and more 4G capable mobile handsets and modems arriving on the market Telstra is providing its customers more value on Telstra’s mobile network. Currently Telstra’s 4G network covers approximately 40% of the population. And Telstra is expanding the 4G network to achieve 66% population coverage by mid 2013.
Since the launch of Telstra’s 4G LTE service last September, the telco’s customers have embraced 4G technology and today more than half a million 4G devices are being used for internet browsing video and music streaming as well as enjoying rich internet content traditionally reserved for desktop PCs.
Telstra states that their 160,000 4G smartphone customers are already saying that 4G is improving their mobile experience, with research showing they’re more likely to reach for their device over their PC to search the web, social network and bank online – compared with 3G smartphone owners.
Telstra recently announced it will more than double its 4G coverage areas in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, extending the reach of Telstra’s 4G service to two-thirds of the population by mid 2013.
Over the next 10 months ultra-fast mobile coverage will continue to spread across all capital cities, including the first new 4G sites launched Bondi and in the North Shore rail tunnel in Sydney.
The network expansion began in Sydney where Telstra introducing some of the world’s fastest mobile internet speeds to customers visiting Bondi Beach and to underground rail passengers travelling on the North Shore line between Central and North Sydney stations.
This expansion will help meet the accelerating demand for ultra-fast fourth generation smartphones and mobile broadband devices among Australians.
Telstra currently provides 4G coverage at over 100 metropolitan and regional locations across the nation including all capital CBDs. The expansion will see more than 1,000 new 4G/LTE base stations installed by mid 2013.
Upon completion the Telstra 4G network will cover more of Australia’s highest population centres with coverage reaching out in a 10-15 kilometre radius from the Sydney GPO and a 15-20 kilometre radius from the Melbourne GPO.
