The original Asus Transformer pad/computer was released in 2011, quickly giving the company a reputation for a quality computer pad-laptop combination that not only was durable but worked reliably as well.
The Asus Transformer Infinity TF700, RRP $999 Australian dollars, is a follow up evolution on last year’s design with a quad-core central processing unit running at 1.6 GHz and an Android 4.0 operating system. The design continues evoke a thin notebook laptop when the unit is enclosed for travel. However, when in use it quickly disconnects and provides the tablet option with a keyboard accessory to use as needed. Unlike the fragile versions some other brands have marketed, Asus has developed a strong reputation for a stable product that doesn’t start to glitch after a bit of use. The Infinity TF700 is aimed to maintain that name for the brand in the laptop-tablet market.
Unlike many alternatives with plastic exteriors, the Infinity has a metal chassis on the keyboard area as well as backside of the tablet. While it gives the unit greater physical strength, the metal parts do add weight. Independent measurement pegs the total weight at 1.13 kg.
Despite the weight, however, the Infinity’s keyboard is quite sizable with good placement of the key structure and size, especially for those with bigger hands. The screen is also fairly sizable, using a display spacing of 10.1 inches across and a very clear display and resolution. The spacing in comparison is larger than that of Apple’s iPad by 0.4 of an inch with a image display just as good, as far as the average person can determine. Tech-geeks will note the Infinity’s display is actually slightly better than the iPad per technical specifications while the iPad has better text clarity.
Owners will be quite happy with the Infinity, but like any new format it takes a bit of getting used to. Once adapted, the flexibility of the tablet-laptop combination will become very helpful for a power user.
