Below are some tips to minimise your power usage which will provide you with even more savings on your electricity and gas bills.
- Insulate your home, insulation retains heat in winter and keeps out the summer time heat
- Keep thermostat temperatures moderate. Don’t over cool in summer or over heat in winter. Recommended settings are for 24°C in summer and 20°C in winter.
- Keep all doors closed to unused areas. This prevents energy being used to heat or cool areas that are not being used.
- Keep the curtains closed over large glass areas where possible as up to 15% of heat can be lost by transfer through glass
- Make sure all appliances are regularly serviced to remove dust and ensure adequate air flow. See your instruction manual for directions.
Buy appliances with a good energy rating
The more stars, the better. Also consider size too, as it can be easier for a larger model to be more efficient (and be awarded more stars) than a smaller unit. But, due to its larger size, the overall energy consumption could be higher than the smaller unit. This applies to all electrical devices even chargers for tablets, phones and mobile devices. For further information on energy rating see here www.energyrating.gov.au/about/what-we-do/labelling
To reduce cooling energy usage:
- Fans use minimal energy as they operate at a fraction of the running cost of air conditioners. Use fans to reduce the number of days you use air conditioning over a summer season.
- Use air conditioners sparingly such as on days where the maximum temperatures are 30°C or higher. This could save you up to 10% of your electricity usage.
- Set the air conditioning unit to re-circulate cool air instead of pulling warmer air in from outside. This increases efficiency.
- If you can increase the room temperature by 1°C, you could save up to 10% of operating costs
To reduce heating energy usage:
- Minimise your use of portable electric heaters. They consume up to 2.4kW per hour and one heater can add hundreds of dollars to one winter electricity bill
- Oil-filled heaters are well suited for bedrooms, because they have low surface temperatures and enclosed elements
- Minimise your usage of heaters. Use heaters only on days minimum temperatures are 10°C or lower and you could save up to 15% of your electricity usage.
