If you’re after mobile broadband Virgin could be worth a look. Virgin Mobile Broadband service uses the Optus 3G network. On its 12 month plans Virgin mobile broadband usage is capped, Virgin’s mobile broadband plans eliminate bill shock as Virgin does not charge for excess usage. And Virgin charges per KB, not per MB. The data included is uploads and downloads & is charged per KB.

If you happen to exceed your data allowance the speed of your mobile broadband speed is limited to 128Kbps for the next 250MB. If you then use more data your service will be unavailable until the first day of your next usage period.

Virgin mobile broadband is available in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Canberra, Hobart, the Gold Coast or the Sunshine Coasts and uses Optus’ 3G network so there’s a good chance you’ll be covered.

Virgin’s mobile broadband plans are 12 month plans and you have the choice of a USB modem or a WiFi modem.

The Virgin Mobile Broadband $19 plan will give you 2 GB of data each month and you pay an extra $7 per month for the WiFi device or  $0 for USB Modem. On this 12mth contract the minimum cost is $228 over 12 months.

Virgin’s $29 plan includes a $0 USB modem or $0 WiFi device and 6GB of data per month. With this 12 month contract the minimum cost is $348 over 12 months.

The $39 plan gives you 12GB of data per month and includes the USB modem or WiFi device at $0. This 12 month contract has a minimum cost of $468 over 12 months.

Virgin’s $59 Mobile Broadband plan gets you 18GB of data per month and includes the USB modem or WiFi device at $0. This 12 month contract has a minimum cost of $708 over 12 months.

The Virgin USB modem is a plug and play device. All you need to do is to connect the USB stick with your PC and the OS automatically detects and recognizes the new hardware and starts the installation wizard.

The LED on the USB modem indicates the status of the device. When the USB Stick is powered on the LED shows green and flashes twice every three seconds.

When the LED is blue and flashing once every three seconds indicates that the USB modem is registering with a 3G/3G+ network.

If the LED is green and solid or not flashing, the USB Stick is connected to the 2G network.

If the LED is blue and not flashing then the USB modem is connected to the Virgin 3G network.

The LED will be Cyan and not flashing when the USB modem is connected to the Virgin 3G+ network.
