Telstra has made the announcement that its 1000Mbps Gigabit LTE network is now fully operational. This makes Telstra the first company to hit this milestone and makes Australia the first country to have these ultrafast speeds on a mobile phone or cellular network. This, according to Telstra is a another step towards 5G technology.
Netgear Nighthawk M1
The network will initially be installed in Australian CBDs and other high traffic areas and will be progressively rolled out to other locations.
Initially it will be available to mobile boradband customers who, purchase a Telstra Netgear Nighthawk M1 made by Netgear. This LTE mobile broadband modem/router will be available for purchase from mid to late February. These speeds will not initially be accessible from mobile phones as there are no phones on the market that can utilise these speeds.
These new, Gigabit download speeds are ten times faster than the 100 Megabit maximum speed offered on NBN fixed broadband plans.
Telstra has stated that the Gigabit download speed was a theoretical maximum speed. In real world situations wireless speeds will not reach these speeds. Especially when you consider that thousands of devices will be connected to the network.
Tests have been conducted in Brisbane and Melbourne, these tests show that speeds of 5Mbps to 300Mbps are achievable in the real world environment.
Telstra also state that speed is not the only benefit for customers, there is also lower latency and the Nighthawk modem/router has the ability for up to 20 devices to connect to it and to access the network through the one connection.
While current range of smartphones on the market are unable to access these network speeds, it is thought that Gigabit LTE enabled phones will become available in the second half of this year.
