Apple iPhone 3G and 3GS iOS 4.0 Software Update

Apple has now launched their new iOS 4.0 software for use on the iPhone.  Everyone with an iPhone 3G or 3G S can upgrade through iTunes at no cost. However not all of the software’s features will be available on all iPhones.

How to upgrade

  • Downloading the latest version of Apple iTunes 9.2, from www.apple.com.au/itunes
  • Connecting your iPhone to iTunes
  • iTunes should automatically identify a compatible software upgrade.  If this does not happen, select your iPhone from the left hand navigation page and then select “Check for Update”
  • Follow the iTunes prompts.

The new software has more than one hundred new features some are listed below:

  • Multitasking: Run your favourite third-party apps and have the ability to switch between them instantly without slowing down the performance of the foreground app or placing an unnecessary drain on the battery.  Unfortuantely this feature is not available on the iPhone 3G.
  • Folders: Organise your apps into folders with the simplicity of drag and drop. Manage up to 2,160 apps at once.
  • Spell checking: A built-in spell checker that works in Mail, Notes and other apps.
  • Even better Mail: See messages from all your accounts in a unified inbox and you can organise messages by threads. You can also open attachments in third-party apps.
  • Faces and Places in Photos: You can now view photos by searching who is in them and the location in which they were taken.
  • Home screen wallpaper: You can change your background wallpaper in your home screen.

The iPhone 3G and 3GS were the first iPhone models to be sold in Australia. To see all the iPhone models read our iPhone History article.
