Currently Vodafone are offering their Pocket WiFi modem as $0 upfront on a $39 per month mobile broadband 12 month plan. This plan is for 12 months gives you 8GB of data per month and the Pocket WiFi Modem itself. The minimum cost over 12 months being $528

The Vodafone Pocket WiFi is a 3G mobile broadband modem that also acts as a wireless hotspot for up to five devices.

Vodafone’s Pocket WiFi display shows signal strength, battery life, the amount of data used for downlink and uplink. The display also shows network status ie GSM, 2G, or 3G connection and also shows how many devices are currently connected to the unit’s WiFi.

The Vodafone Pocket WiFi charges via a standard microUSB port via the  included AC adapter or USB cable. The device is able to be used wgilst the unit is charging. The Pocket WiFi lists battery life of up to five hours.

The Vodafone Pocket WiFi modem comes with a default SSID and WEP key for security, and you are able to change these settings by typing http://pocket.wifi into your web browser.

The Pocket WiFi’s easy to use interface lets you change your password and the name of your WiFi network. Also you are able to configure advanced wireless and 3G settings.

Vodafone’s Pocket WiFi operates on the following frequencies 1800MHz (2G), 1900MHz (2G), 2100MHz (3G), 850MHz (2G), 900MHz (2G), 900MHz (3G).  Maximum theoretical download speed is 7.2Mbps and maximum theoretical upload speed is 5.8Mbps. WiFi  technology supported is wireless 802.11b and wireless 802.11g.

The Vodafone Pocket WiFi modem does not have an external antenna connector to boost reception but an inductive patch lead coupled with a correct 3G antenna should help improve reception within coverage areas.
