It's official! Google have finally launched their first flagship smartphone! The Google Pixel is the new kid on the block that is sure to finally shake up the smartphone market. While Samsung reigns supreme in the Android space, and Apple's iPhone is a behemoth seemingly incapable of being knocked off the top of the smartphone sales in Australia, the Google Pixel is poised to potentially be a giant buster.
Availably exclusively via Telstra in Australia currently, the phone was released in October 2016, and is now available for Telstra customers for $91 per month for the 32GB model, and $100 per month for the 128GB version, and at the time of print comes along with a bonus free Daydream View VR for VR viewing with your smartphone. These are both only available on 24 month contracts, the standard contract length available for Telstra customers.
You can either own the phone outright after 24 months, or choose to lease it from Telstra, which means that you're eligible for an upgrade at the end of a year, and all you'll have to do is pay a $99 upgrade fee and swap your older model over for a newer one.
The Pixel comes in two versions - much like the iPhone - the regular Google Pixel, and the Google Pixel XL. This means that customers can get a model that fits easily in one hand, or one a little larger for people with big hands, or those that really like viewing media on their phone.
As you can expect from a potential giant slayer, the Google Pixel really sets out to raise the bar among smartphones. And it does do just that. Would we expect anything else from one of the world's largest tech companies? Here's where the Google Pixel really stands out.
Just like Apple with Siri, Google has their very own personal assistant AI available to be at your beck and call. To access the personal assistant, all you have to say is 'OK Google'. Like other AIs, the more that you use Google's personal assistant, the better they get with understanding you, helping you with what you want, and learning what you need.
The first ever phone to be awarded a camera score of 89 by the DxOMark, the Google Pixel camera is a heavyweight even compared to the awesome quality of the Samsung Galaxy S7 and the Apple iPhone 7. This best in class camera gives it a clear edge over the competition. Great for shooting in both bright light and low light, the 12MP camera can take pictures that really turn heads. The sharpness of images beats out the iPhone, too. The secondary selfie camera is a beefy 8MP.
That's right, unlimited storage for all your photos and videos. The Google cloud option gives you unlimited storage capacity with your Google Pixel. All your photos and videos, forever, stored in the cloud with nothing more to pay. You're also able to set up the Pixel so that if you start running out of on device storage, it'll automatically free up space, all without telling you that you're running low on room.
Much like iPhone's FaceTime, Google have introduced their proprietary video calling apps so you can call up and see friends and family all in a tap or two. Named Google Duo, you're also able to set up the Knock Knock function which can show the caller before you actually pick up their video call.
SMS finally gets an upgrade with Google Allo. The messaging app now allows rich text links, such as to maps, and nearby restaurants, and you can even get Google personal assistant to help you from within the messaging app to find things that you need to send through to your family and friends. Combine this with some cool stickers and the ability to include other add-ons, and you'll soon find it's messaging as you've never known before.
Forget having to plug in your phone all night just to get a full charge out of it. With the Pixel and the Google reversible USB Type-C charger, you can get a whole 7 hours of battery in just a 15 minute charge. It's lightning fast charging, because we can't sit around waiting for our phones to charge for half of our lives, can we? The battery life of the phone is also pretty cool too - in fact, many users have reported getting a full two days use out of the phone, rather than the one day that is typical for smartphone users.
With a new phone often comes a whole lot of new accessories to help your phone be more useful, and it's no different with the Google Pixel. You should think about whether you're going to need to get yourself a case to protect your phone, along with a screen protector. For charging, you can look at mains chargers, car chargers, and data cables to help you to get more juice from your phone. Car cradles offer the added benefits of a charge, as well as somewhere to place your phone to use as a GPS for in car directions. Bluetooth kits allow you to use your handset hands free, either while out and about, or while driving. Powerbanks can give you extra battery life even when you're not next to a power outlet. And finally, if you like your music loud with crisp quality, you can pick up a Bluetooth speaker to make the most out of your music. Campad Electronics has all these accessories available from leaders in the phone accessories business.
