Samsung Galaxy S20 FE (Fan Edition)
Samsung's Galaxy S20 is an impressive lineup of flagship devices. While most people would want to own an S20, the S20's expensive pricing means that only a few can afford it. To combat this problem, and to bring S20 smartphones closer to consumers with a lower budget, Samsung has introduced the new Galaxy S20 FE (Fan Edition).
The Galaxy S20 FE starts at around $999 in Australia, which is $350 cheaper than the standard S20. While this is a good deal, you’ll realize there are quite a few tradeoffs to achieve a lower price point. Samsung announced this new device on September 24th, 2020.
The S2O FE Design and Display
You will still get a great design from the S20 FE. Nonetheless, the S2O FE replaces the glass rear in the S20 with a polycarbonate plastic and the Gorilla Glass 6 with Gorilla Glass 3. Whereas a glass rear is preferable due to its premium feel, the plus side of having a plastic back is the wide range of colors you get. The S2O FE is available in Cloud Mint, Cloud Lavender, Cloud Orange, Cloud White, and Cloud Navy. Since plastic is more susceptible to scratches, getting a case is a great idea.
The S20 FE has a 6.5 inch Infinity O display, with a resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels, which is excellent for viewing and gaming. The device also maintains the same 120Hz refresh rate as the other S20s, which smoothens your on-screen experience. There is also an under-display optical fingerprint reader.
Camera
The cameras are a bit different from those in the S20. You get a 32MP front camera, and on the rear, a 12MP primary lens, 12MP ultra wide, and an 8MP telephoto. Whereas the numbers may not be as outrageous as those in its siblings, the camera setup isn't disappointing either. You will still enjoy some cool features like 3x optical zoom, 4K and 1080p videos with the cameras, and the photo output should be good, if not great.
Memory and Performance
The S20 FE has 6GB RAM and 128GB base storage, which is expandable via an external memory card. It runs on Samsung's One UI 2.5 and Android 10. Perhaps the best feature performance-wise is the Snapdragon 865 5G chipset, which is available globally. So, no more Exynos nightmares this time. The Galaxy S20 Fan Edition is thus a high-performance device that should comfortably power you through all your activities, no matter how heavy.
Battery
The Galaxy S20 FE brings you the S20 Ultra's 4,500 mAh non-removable battery. The large battery should be able to last you through a whole day of use. The S20 FE also supports 25W fast charging and reverse charging at 4.5 W. If you thought the plastic back would mean no wireless charging, you'll be surprised to learn the phone can still charge wirelessly at 15W.
Verdict
The Galaxy S20 FE is a worthy competitor against cheaper flagships like the standard iPhone 11. With this new device, Samsung has managed to bring an affordable flagship smartphone to android fans. We expect the S20 FE to be released on October 02, 2020.
