Internet connectivity has become a necessity in most homes and businesses over recent years. But portable mobile hotspots have taken the flexibility of internet usage a notch higher. As the 5G network slowly comes into the market, Netgear has announced the Nighthawk M5 5G Wi-Fi router that will significantly revolutionize internet usage.
It is important to note that the Nighthawk M5 hot spot will be made available for use with all mobile carriers and will come in an unlocked version. The device will support all 5G versions (sub-6 networks and millimeter-wave), connecting users through the Wi-Fi 6 network. The latest Wi-Fi 6 technology used has improved dual-band technology that can be used with over 30 devices without the signal strength dropping. Combining both technologies will allow advanced connectivity, even when on the go.
"At NETGEAR, we believe in pioneering a new generation of connectivity, and the key technologies leading the charge are Wi-Fi 6 and 5G, which will fundamentally change the way we work, live, and adopt digital experiences. The Nighthawk M5 combines the power of these two wireless technologies and provides an option for advanced connectivity in a mobile environment," said David Henry, Vice President at Netgear.
The M5, now released, has the potential to replace home internet as it comes with an ethernet port that can be used to connect 5G internet on existing routers in the house. This is an excellent addition to the product considering that hotspots have a lower Wi-Fi range, and will therefore allow users to utilize the long-range that's found with larger routers.
The M5 promises breakneck internet speeds of up to 1.8 gigabits per second and low latency across all locations. This will allow HD streaming even on 4K devices. You can seamlessly work from home while your kids get to play online video games.
Additionally, the product has a dedicated 2.4” LCD touchscreen that allows users to manage the settings of the device. The display also allows users to track data usage, connection status, Wi-Fi name, and password. The router comes with a rechargeable and removable li-ion battery, and the router can function without it as long as it is plugged to a power connection.
To allow better usability, there is a Nighthawk app that gives users remote control over the device. You can manage the network from the app at any time, check internet speeds, and even set up a guest account for visitors to access Wi-Fi. The app also allows for parental control, where you can manage what sites they access and only permit them to access specific types of content. The app is available on Google play store and Apple app store.
The successor the the Nighthawk M2, the Nighthawk M5 (MR5200) was announced at the CES 2020. It was scheduled to launch in the later half of 2020 which it did through Telstra in late November 2020. It is a mobile hotspot that has 5G capability and Wi-Fi 6 capability. The M5 supports all versions of 5G (mmWave and Sub-6GHz) and Netgear claim the M5 will deliver speeds up to 4Gb/s over 5G. The device is also 4G compatible. Netgear has chosen M5 as the model number (and skipped M3 and M4) likely because this is the company's first 5G Nighthawk.
As well as 5G speeds the Nighthawk M5 has increased WiFi speeds thanks to WiFi6. There is no point having 5G speeds if your WiFi cannot keep up and the latest WiFi 6 tecnology delivers these fast 5G speeds to all your connected devices with up to four times more capacity than AC WiFi.
The secure WiFi will allow up to 32 devices to be connected at once so is perfect for large familes, permanent home or office use or even large mobile workforce teams.
Pricing and local availability have been announced and the Nighthawk M5 release date was in late November 2020 with the Nighthawk being priced at $799 outright from Telstra or as device repayments over 24 months for $33.29/mth. 12 month device repayments are priced at $66.58/month from Telstra at launch. Device payments are avaiable so long as you stay connected on an eligible Telstra plan.
