Budget phones are the cheapest way to get a flagship-like experience, and the new Oppo A72 serves to prove this point. The A72 retails at only $299 but has the feel and look of a much pricier phone. The phone spots an impressive camera array, an exquisite design, and a big battery making it one of the best mid-range phones of 2020. The Oppo A72 is exclusive to Optus and is an Optus prepaid phone.
Design and Display
Oppo A72 has a stunning 3D Quad-curve design, which gives it a smooth feel to the hand. The large 6.5 inch full HD display, with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels, easily steals the spotlight. The high resolution combines with slim bezels to give you immersive and clear viewing experience. On the top left side, is a small punch-hole selfie camera that offers little or no obstruction.
The phone's rear, in Oppo’s on words, is ‘inspired by the stars.’ You get a Quad cam setup in a constellation array but with a noticeable bump. If the bump proves to be much of a bother, there is an in box protective case that efficiently solves the problem. The A72 is available in two colors, Aurora Blue and Twilight Black, both inspired by the polar region.
Camera
The camera department is also another area where the A72 stands out. On the front is a 16MP camera that takes good pictures, and is supplemented by Oppo’s beautification tech. On the rear is a 48MP AI Quad Cam set up, which headlines for all the right reasons by budget phone standards.
You get a 48MP primary camera, a 119° ultrawide lens, and two 2MP portrait style lens. The lenses take quality pictures, which isn’t typical of budget phones. The night mode is also quite good for a mid-range smartphone. On top of this, you can record 4K videos at a decent 30fps, and you also get to enjoy the ultra slomo feature at 120fps. The lack of a depth sensor is quite disheartening, but overall, the camera experience is excellent.
Memory and Performance
The A72 runs on Android 10 and Oppo's ColorOS 7.1. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 655 Chipset and has a 4GB RAM + 128 GB ROM, which gives a fast and smooth performance. Therefore, the phone can run most apps comfortably, and for heavy usage, the Hyper Boost performance engine comes in handy for faster speeds. The ROM is expandable by an additional 128GB in case the default storage isn’t enough.
Battery
The A72's 5000mAh battery tops off what is already an impressive display by the phone. On standby, it has a battery life of a whole week and should last two days on light use. Under heavy usage, the battery runs out in just under a day. The 18W fast charger accompanying it makes sure you get back to 100% in minimal time.
Final Take
By most standards, the A72 is the budget phone to beat. Despite its low pricing, this Oppo smartphone manages to give a user an excellent experience worth every cent and probably more. Oppo A72 became available for purchase as an Optus exclusive on 9th June 2020.
